DENIM & DIAMONDS

This quilt was created for a Philanthropic fund raiser for the Women’s Club of Forest Hills. The theme of the event was Denim & Diamonds, so I scoured the internet for multiple colors of blue denim and some red and white as well. The argyle pattern was a no brainer. Working with the denim was a chore on my sewing machine, as many points coming together made for difficult sewing. I just used a denim (Jeans) needle, and went very slowly over the seams, steam ironing them all open. A red inner border worked well, and a lucky find on-line of the blue diamond patterned cotton fabric for the outer border completed the quilt top. Since actually quilting it would have presented many problems for my Viking sewing machine, I decided to tie the quilt with red Pearl yarn, the old fashioned way. It is backed with a multi-blue brushed flannel. A great quilt to nap under.!

BRIGHT BABY QUILT

BRIGHT BABY QUILT

For a friend’s grandchild, I designed a really bright and playful quilt. I am not personally a fan of pastel quilts, because I know babies react to bright colors; so this square in a square in a square quilt was fun to do. An array of related prints framed in contrasting colors, some of which had appliquéd squares inserted onto the centers worked well for my concept. It was backed with a stash fabric of smaller bright squares in primary colors. The parents-to-be were very happy. I hope the baby will be too.

Imperial Diamonds

I made this quilt Called “Imperial Diamonds” for my sister Rita and her spouse, Christine. The design is by Jean Nolte, editor of Love of Quilting Magazine. It is loaded with different batik squares, all different. The wide borders are of a really intensely colorful batik, which draws all the colors of the smaller squares. The center was long-arm quilted by Melanie Vaughn of City Quilter, and I did the outer parts. I can’t manage a king-sized quilt on my home machine very well.

Holiday Table Runners

At Christmas time, I get to sewing gifts for family and friends, and every hostess loves to receive a hand made gift for her table. Here are a few of the ones I made for 2013. Using bright red and green, or an array of frosty blues, or muted earth tones, one can create a great variety of thematic holiday table dressings.

Thiel Regatta

This wall hanging was made for our Lake George neighbors Nancy and Rob to cover an electrical panel in their lake house. So, of course, it had to be boat related. Using many strips of left over fabrics, I created sail boats, and superimposed them on to a teal colored base. Very Lake!

Crazy Quilt

This crazy quilt evolved over many years, as I kept adding embroidery, beading, buttons, and bows, braid, lace, and charms. The panels were done as individual twelve-inch blocks, and it was hard to finally stop, deciding when “enough” was “enough”. That’s the thing about crazy quilts! I decided to join the blocks with dark green grosgrain ribbon, and back it with black velvet. It is now a wall hanging.

Outer Space

This bright quilt was made for my grandson Estifanos, who at a very young age, was fascinated with the moon. I found a panel of fifteen different space images, cut it up into individual pictures. I selected vivid primary colored prints of suns and stars for the frames, and sashing, and finished with an over all yellow backing of suns. It is out of this world, and he loves it.

Boy Blue – Take II

This quilt was made from additional fabric leftovers from a prior quilt. I recut the wedges into narrower slices, and put them together on cloth foundations, sew and flip style. Playing on my design wall, I decided upon alternated directions for the blocks, then just framing the quilt top in red, white and blue. It has a bright, patriotic look.

I mitered the corners of the three borders.

Amish With A Twist

This dramatic king-sized quilt in Amish colors was designed by Nancy Rink. It was a kit in many segments, twelve different classic blocks, using black as the backdrop. The borders contain stylized appliqué flowers. The bright pieced inner border and sashing blocks brighten it up. I sent it to Melanie Vaughn at The City Quilter in NYC for long-arm quilting. It was too big for me to manage on my domestic sewing machine. It was a most enjoyable project.

Baby Boy Blue II

This quilt was made for a grand nephew, Conor. I wanted to use a large number of light to medium blue fabrics, and break it up with splashes of red, and really dark blue. Running the wedge shaped patches in sequence created an even flow of color and balance. Sashing the rows with a white print with red and blue stars, and framing it in dark blue tied it all together. I quilted each patch with curved lines, which created a flowing motif across the quilt.
