I made this quilt Called “Imperial Diamonds” for my sister Rita and her spouse, Christine. The design is by Jean Nolte, editor of Love of Quilting Magazine. It is loaded with different batik squares, all different. The wide borders are of a really intensely colorful batik, which draws all the colors of the smaller squares. The center was long-arm quilted by Melanie Vaughn of City Quilter, and I did the outer parts. I can’t manage a king-sized quilt on my home machine very well.

Amish With A Twist
25 05 2013This dramatic king-sized quilt in Amish colors was designed by Nancy Rink. It was a kit in many segments, twelve different classic blocks, using black as the backdrop. The borders contain stylized appliqué flowers. The bright pieced inner border and sashing blocks brighten it up. I sent it to Melanie Vaughn at The City Quilter in NYC for long-arm quilting. It was too big for me to manage on my domestic sewing machine. It was a most enjoyable project.

Gatsby – for Iris and Mawuena

This quilt is my take on a design by Jean Nolte published in Fons & Porter 2008. A king sized quilt for a modern young couple to celebrate their wedding. It was easy to piece, with my own choice of muted colors. I added a multi-banded mitered border to give it a traditional touch. Quilting it on my home machine was a real challenge. I utilized the tips I learned from an on-line quilting course by Ann Petersen entitled “Quilting Big Projects on a Small Machine”. A life saver!

Log Cabin Garden
27 10 2010This king-size, reversible, Log Cabin quilt was made for my daughter Nikita. I chose greens, from mint to forest, and purples from palest lavender to deepest plum for the color scheme. Since she has many lilac bushes around her house, I settled on that as a theme, searching high and low for the appropriate fabrics. The core of each block is a sunny yellow, which quietly asserts itself among the cooler colors. Since it is very difficult for me to quilt such a large piece on my sewing machine, I used the “quilt-as-you-go” method. Cutting squares from each fabric, I pieced and quilted the log cabin blocks, one-by-one, until I had eighty.

Log Cabin – Classic Black and White
11 05 2010This is the most classic of Log Cabin patterns, light and shadow. There are eighty blocks in this quilt, the center of each, the hearth, is red. The process of making this follows the Fons & Porter method of cutting out all the size strips, and lining them up in a pizza box to stay organized. I then chain stitched the segments as they were added one by one to the growing blocks.
