Holiday Table Runners

31 05 2014

At Christmas time, I get to sewing gifts for family and friends, and every hostess loves to receive a hand made gift for her table.  Here are a few of the ones I made for 2013. Using bright red and green, or an array of frosty blues, or muted earth tones, one can create a great variety of thematic holiday table dressings.

Fallen Leaves

27 02 2013

This mini quilt, constructed from twenty-five different fabrics, plus the borders, was the result of a class at City Quilter, called ‘Little Bits”.  The design is by Cindi Edgerton, and reminds me of walking in the woods in the deep Fall, with all the magnificent colors on the ground.  The project was “paper pieced”, with very careful attention to the placement of the colors and bits.  The little piles of each color were placed in a precise order because each one “borrowed” some bits from adjacent piles.  It was a very interesting project, and resulted in a delightful table topper for Autumn.  I found in my stash the perfect border, of Autumn Leaves.

Stripes to Diamonds

13 06 2012

This small quilt was made from one yard of a stripped fabric, cut into strips on the bias, and pieced back together.  Then it was quilted in the ditch along all the diamond shapes, giving the illusion of a pieced quilt.

Victorian Placemats

13 06 2012

My daughter Nikita has a Victorian home, and requested placemats for her dark blue dining room. I raided my extensive stash and came up with this luminous variety of blues, for two different pairs of mats, all with the same backing, giving her a variety of ways to use them.  For all those tiny triangles, I used half-square triangle paper sheets to insure accurate sizing, and precise points.

Courthouse Steps

17 11 2010

This is another double sided, “quilt-as-you-go” project.  I found a lovely small-scale floral print to use for one side, and selected a variety of green and cream prints for my steps.  The final result is a strong pattern on the front side, and a very soft, easy-on-the-eyes back side. The reversible binding technique I learned from Judy Doenias  at City Quilter.  It makes a neat  knife edge finish.

Winter/Holiday Placemats

28 10 2010

These sweet holiday placemats come in sets of four.  The winter scenes are outline-quilted to define all the critical lines of the images.  The sky portions are free motion quilted to give a sense of moving air, and smoke emanating from the little chimneys. They are backed with a dainty white-on-white floral print.

Butter & Batik Squares

21 10 2010

The simplest shape there is to sew, The Square, lends itself to countless treatments.  In this small piece, I used two-inch, and six-inch patches in a modern layout to stress the squares, and quilted them in like fashion, to emphasize the shape.  The batik I chose blended very well with the soft buttery yellow.

Snowmen

27 05 2010

This winter scene of snowman mixed with glistening ice blues is a lovely holiday piece of home decor.  I made it for my niece who has a passion for snowmen.  It is a simple design, with strip sets of the blues cut into bands and joined together, set between bands of snowmen.

Bar Code

27 05 2010

This quilt was a study in free motion quilting patterns which are different for each color in the quilt.  I utilized a variety a soft colors in bars that reminded me of bar codes.   Placing the batik strips randomly, and then making rows resulted in a pleasant, easy-on-the-eyes piece for a table top or a wall hanging.

Pinwheel Set

9 04 2010

This pair of ornamental quilts is a study in dimension.  The high contrast colors of red, black and cream make pinwheels with lots of motion.  Hang one on a wall and place its mate on a table to bring drama to the dining room.
